
Regattas and Other water spectacles
Ever since
coming to the Upstate, we've been impressed with how the locals have put to good
advantage their bodies of water. Unlike the lakes we grew up near in our
home states of Minnesota and Illinois, most of the area lakes are man-made, most
notably Hartwell Lake, formed by a large
US Army Corps of
Engineers Dam on the Savannah River. It is here that we
find events, including sailing competitions which draw sailors and their boats
from literally all over the country.
Much smaller, and less well known, is
Broadway Lake,
contained entirely within Anderson County. While not large enough to
support the large events that Hartwell does, Broadway Lake nonetheless is our
favorite. It reminds us more of our roots; a small lake more suitable for
canoes than for large, expensive sailboats. In fact, Pete has found it to
be so much to his liking that he now writes a
column based upon it for
Lakeside News.
